About the Role

Our client is an independent fine art dealership primarily dealing in contemporary art. They have a permanent gallery outside London, and are opening a new space in Notting Hill, London, which will primarily function as a viewing room. Most pieces sell for between £1k-£25k.

They are on the hunt for a Sales Associate (title negotiable) to manage this space, firstly alongside one of the co-owners and eventually independently.

This role would suit someone who is independent and proactive, and interested in a long-term career within the gallery. Candidates with existing clients are especially of interest.

The role can be worked part time or full time but, either way, the candidate will ideally work some Saturdays – at least initially - with the addition of art fairs in the UK and abroad.

Key duties and responsibilities:

Sales and Client Development:

  • Expanding and nurturing relationships with existing collectors to increase the dealership’s sales and revenue.
  • Creating and pursuing opportunities to bring in new collectors to the existing client pool to increase the dealership’s sales and revenue.
  • Networking – attending openings and events, acting as an ambassador for the dealership to assist in expanding its profile, industry connections and outreach.
  • Providing collectors with support and collection advice - delivering excellent client service while always having the dealership’s goals and interests in mind.
  • Researching new markets, regions of opportunity for the dealership.
  • Researching art fairs – suggesting new potential art fairs that you believe would be beneficial to the dealership. Working with the Directors for sign off on fair participation.
  • When assigned, assisting on fair booth design and sales strategy.
  • Ensuring that pre-sales and post-sales artworks are always delivered suitably and on time.
  • Coordinating marketing and sales strategies to expand the dealership’s client base and sales
  • Providing input, feedback and sharing information to ensure clarity and understanding within the team.
  • Ensuring coherent and collegiate collaboration.
  • Ensuring all digital aspects of the gallery are coherent and consistent with the physical presentation (i.e. emails, website, social media).

Artist Support:

  • Introducing and promoting the artists which the dealership represents to expand their market and sales opportunities.
  • Supporting the artists with sales industry knowledge and input to assist the growth of the artist’s career and sales potential.
  • Working on strategy for exhibition program and artist sales outreach to make exhibitions profitable and successful.
  • Supporting the identification of new potential artists with the view of expanding the programme – providing industry knowledge and feedback.
  • Working on documentation for artists’ catalogues to be used as references and also published material around any shows.

Requirements and Experience:

  • 2/3 years minimum experience in commercial galleries or a related field within a sales environment.
  • Demonstrable experience in generating sales and revenue and reaching agreed targets.
  • Ideally possess an active network of international clients and institutional contacts.
  • In depth understanding of the contemporary art market and gallery system.
  • Proven organizational skills with the ability to prioritise.
  • Proven digital and tech skills in social media and web services to optimize business operations, enhance online visibility, and drive revenue.
  • Always proactive and productive.
  • Team player, but also able to work independently.
  • Happy to travel to art fairs, etc
  • Fluent in English. Other language(s) an advantage.
  • Relevant Art History or related degree is preferable.

Salary: Around £35k d.o.e. for full time (pro-rata for part time) plus commission (plus potential equity based on 3 year vesting period)

Schedule: Full-time or part time; on site is required for a minimum of 3 days per week and flexibility to go in all 5 days is required in order to meet with clients, if necessary.
